Short Story Prize Winner PDF Print E-mail
We are so thrilled to announce the results from the Short Story Prize! We received an impressive slew of entries and our finalist judge David James Duncan selected three incredible stories for the winning prizes.

Duncan selected the prize winner, "The Miracles of Vincent Van Gogh" by Shann Ray, and called it a "fabulous story" and wrote: "In fact, if I were asked to highlight one excellence of this story I couldn’t do it. I’d have to name three because they all work together: 1) the prose rhythms; 2) the triple narrative; 3) the matching physical and philosophical depth." This story will be published in the upcoming Spring Issue of Ruminate--Issue 15: Borrowing. The theme for this issue,"Borrowing," was inspired by Mr. Ray's story and we are thrilled to have the chance to share it all with you! It will release mid-March.

Shann Ray teaches leadership and forgiveness studies at Gonzaga University. His work has recieved Pushcart, O'Henry, and Best American nominations, and has been published in Best New Poets, Poetry International, McSweeney's, StoryQuarterly, and Montana Quarterly.  He is the winner of Subterrain's Lush Triumphant Literary Award for Poetry, and the Crab Creek Review Fiction Prize.  He spent part of his childhood on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in southeast Montana, works with marriages and families as a systems psychologist, and has served as a research psychologist for the Centers for Disease Control. He says of his wife, "she wears the garment of praise instead of the spirit of despair" and of his daughters, "they are gifts of God and with their joy they heal the world. Shann writes: "I want to thank David James Duncan and the editors of Ruminate for the grace, kindness, and illumination they so freely give."
