Yes, it's cheesy, and yes, I'm climbing onto my soapbox, but hear me out.
This holiday season, as we all endeavor to be smart shoppers,
looking for bargains, sales and markdowns, I'd like to remind you of
another aspect of smart shopping. As you stroll out, list in hand,
ready to do the good work of a holiday elf, remember that shopping
locally will not only take care of everything on your list, but will
also serve as an investment in the community in which you live.
Studies show that shopping locally boost local economies and nurture
diversity and entrepreneurship. Local businesses recirculate 68% of
their revenues back into their communities, whereas chain stores
average about 43%. Furthermore, local businesses donate to community
causes at twice the rate of chains.
Giving the gift of Ruminate is another way to support community. Ruminate is
a nonprofit magazine of the arts, run by passionate volunteers who are
as much readers of the magazine as anyone else. The love that goes into
making Ruminate is evident in the gorgeous pages of each issue,
as well as in the lasting relationships between the staff,
contributors, and subscribers. Ruminate is truly a community
endeavor, and relies on subsciptions and donations to keep the presses
running. And remember, a gift subscription to Ruminate continues to give all year long!
Our website reflects our wish that Ruminate will
provide "stimulation, encouragement, community, and hope." As a reader,
you are a part of this community, and we are happy to have you.

Happy holidays!
